Job Description:

The successful candidate will be responsible for a wide range of marketing and communications functions including ad sales, event planning, copywriting, promotions and target marketing. The Marketing Assistant must be flexible, proactive, detail-oriented and comfortable in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities:

Advertising Sales

  • • Research and identify prospects in the Calgary market and secure ad sales for Wordfest’s 64-page Festival Guide and other advertising opportunities through Wordfest
  • • Pitch benefits of advertising in the Festival Guide to new and returning clients; explain pricing, complete sales and prepare invoices
  • • Track sales against available space in the Festival Guide and fundraising target.
  • • Follow up on invoice payment and deadlines for submitting ad files and creative.

Event Planning

  • • Management and coordination of Wordfest Media Launch Party
  • • Management and coordination of Wordfest presence at community festivals
  • • Assist staff with data entry and analysis related to Festival events and artists

Promotions

  • • Maintain the Festival’s social media feeds (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and others)
  • • Coordinate and implement distribution strategy for marketing materials
  • • Design target marketing campaigns and promotions for special interest groups
  • • Identify retail promotional opportunities
  • • Coordinate promotion of Wordfest at community events

Target Marketing

  • • Create and implement target marketing strategy
  • • Update and maintain media contact lists and databases Copywriting and Editing
  • • Writing articles for Wordfest’s monthly e-newsletter and website as needed

Copywriting and Editing

  • • Writing articles for Wordfest’s monthly e-newsletter and website as needed
  • • Copywriting and editing of electronic and print marketing materials

Qualifications:

The candidate should be a post-secondary student with an interest and/or concentration in marketing, communications, event management, public relations and/or journalism. The candidate should have:

  • • Strong organizational skills
  • • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • • Flexibility and willingness to jump in
  • • Excellent oral communication skills
  • • Comfortable working in Microsoft Office, knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite an asset

Supervision: This position is under the direct supervision of the Communications Coordinator. The Marketing Assistant receives ongoing training, feedback and performance reviews.

Contract term: May 1 to August 29, 2014 (subject to change). Salary: $12 /hr @ 40 hours / week.
