For Immediate Release:

(Calgary, AB — Monday, September 22) Wordfest announced Kate Pullinger as the 2014 Anne Green Award recipient. The annual award is given to an artist whose work explores and challenges the traditional form of story and narrative.

Pullinger’s latest novel, Landing Gear, to be presented at Wordfest, was selected for the 2014 Anne Green Award for successfully challenging and exploring the possibilities of the written word, while maintaining roots in story, narrative and literary form.

The award will be presented to Pullinger during her Wordfest event, Storytelling on the Digital Edge, at The Banff Centre on October 18, 3pm, Kinnear Centre, Room 2013. Tickets are $20.

Kate Pullinger is the author of ten novels, including The Mistress of Nothing, which won the Governor General’s Literary Award for Fiction. Pullinger's prize-winning digital fiction projects Inanimate Alice and Flight Paths: A Networked Novel have reached audiences around the world. Pullinger co-wrote the novel of the film The Piano with director Jane Campion.

Landing Gear explores the complexity of contemporary life and the unexpected ties that bring people together. The novel draws on real-life accounts of airplane stowaways as the basis for this highly imaginative and exhilarating story.

Our modern world is inter-connected in myriad ways. From global flights which move workers between countries, to electronic communication that erases distances between friends, to families living great distances apart. Here Pullinger examines the complex relationships between a diverse cast of contemporary characters whose lives sometimes literally crash into each other.

The award is named for Anne Green, Founding Director of Wordfest and long-time professional in the Canadian arts community. Thanks to a private donor, a fund was created after the 15th anniversary of Wordfest in 2010 to recognize the incredible contribution of the departing Founding Director, and to continue Green’s commitment to profiling innovative work that challenges genres and narrative forms.
