Job Description:

The successful candidate will work closely with the Youth Program Manager to assist the organization to connect new markets with multilingual and cultural programming with a focus on providing subsidized programming to vulnerable youth across Calgary. The Youth and Cultural Connections Coordinator must be flexible, proactive, detail-oriented and comfortable in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities:

New Market Development

• Acquire potential youth event supporters whose contribution (financial or in-kind) strengthen the outreach initiatives and make the youth program accessible to youth at risk and aboriginal youth.
• Collaborate on communication campaigns designed to promote the youth program to educational institutions, youth community organizations and literary supporters
• Research, collect and maintain fundraising data; identify prospective funders and community partners
• Represent Wordfest in the community where appropriate (events are often outside of office hours)
• Coordinate promotion of Wordfest Youth toward new markets

Program Development and Promotion

• Develop educational support materials for K-12 teachers and their students (Reading guides based on festival books, activity sheets and craft activities suitable for learning goals linked to Alberta curriculum
• Provide administrative support in sales administration, communication, artist management, event planning and management
• Management and coordination of Wordfest Youth media launch
• Assist staff with data entry and analysis related to Festival authors and events
• Research and identify prospects in the Calgary market and secure ad sales for Wordfest’s 64-page Festival Guide and other advertising opportunities through Wordfest
• Pitch benefits of advertising in the Festival Guide to new and returning clients; explain pricing, complete sales and prepare invoices

Qualifications:

The candidate should be a post-secondary student with an interest and/or concentration in marketing, communications, event management, public relations and/or journalism. The candidate should have:
• Strong organizational skills
• Excellent writing and editing skills
• Flexibility and willingness to jump in
• Excellent oral communication skills
• Some experience in an administrative support role
• Comfortable working in Microsoft Office, knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite an asset
• Language skills (French and/or Spanish) an strong asset

Supervision: This position is under the direct supervision of the Youth Program Manager. The Youth and Cultural Connections Coordinator receives ongoing training, feedback and performance reviews.

Contract term: May 11 to mid-August 2015 (14 weeks) Salary: $12 /hr @ 40 hours / week.
