Keon and Me

ARCHIVE – Dave Bidini

Dave Bidini – musician, award–winning writer and sports enthusiast – brings wild intelligence and wit to all his creative pursuits. A founding member of the acclaimed indie-rock band The Rheostatics, Bidini’s latest musical ventures are with The BidiniBand, whose wide-ranging first collection, The Land is Wild, came out to wide acclaim in 2009. Bidini has written regularly for the National Post, This Magazine and other publications, and his essay “Travels in Narnia” won Gold at the National Magazine Awards in 2009. He is the author of multiple books; most of them are about his twin passions of sports and music.

Keon and Me

Told in two narratives – one from the point of view of young Bidini growing up in Toronto and the other from the perspective of the man looking for his absent hero – Keon and Me tells the story of a hockey icon who has haunted Toronto for decades and of a life lived in parallel to Keon’s. It’s the story of cultural change, an account of the tribulations of the NHL’s most beloved (and most despised) franchise in the decades since Keon left and, most of all, it is a story of growing up, with all the wisdom and sadness that imparts.
