Special Event / Fundraiser / Awards
I predict it will have you clutching your books like long lost children. — Loreena McKennitt, musician, on Nicholas Carr’s The Shallows
Calgary Reads’ signature fundraising event presented with Wordfest and hosted by Dave Kelly.
An evening of delights for passionate readers, book lovers and literacy supporters: Author reading and discussion, presentation of THE BOOKIE AWARDS, wine, exquisite desserts, raffle, and Book Market with literary gems and reading paraphernalia!
The evening features Nicholas Carr who is renowned for his 2011 Pulitzer Prize finalist for non-fiction, The Shallows: How the Internet is Changing the Way We Read, Think and Remember. Carr has recently released The Glass Cage: Automation and Us.
Nicholas Carr challenges: as we enjoy the Internet’s bounties, are we sacrificing our ability to read and think deeply? Carr is fervent about the importance of reading to our brain development and what he describes as the unfortunate decline of the focused ‘linear mind’.
