Hector-Tobar-smlIn conversation with Cathy Ostlere, Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist and novelist Héctor Tobar presents Deep Down Dark, the riveting story of the 33 men who spent 69 days trapped more than 2,000 feet underground in Chile’s San José Mine in 2010.

Having obtained exclusive access to the miners and their families, Tobar compassionately recounts the miners’ personal experiences during the 17 days they were without outside contact, he drama above ground with the families living near the mine in their makeshift “Camp Esperanza,” and the global celebrity following their release.

Héctor Tobar has worked as a journalist for the Los Angeles Times for nearly twenty years and shared a Pulitzer Prize for the paper’s coverage of the 1992 riots. Tobar currently writes a weekly column for the paper. His other books include Translation Nation, The Tattooed Soldier and Barbarian Nurseries.
