TK New Headline

Once upon a time (okay, 1976), a champion tennis player became critically injured in a skydiving accident. Top cybernetic scientists rebuilt her, using bionic parts to make her exceptionally strong and fast, with super-heightened senses. Jaimie Sommers was now the Six Million Dollar Woman, a high-school teacher who worked undercover as a secret agent for the Office of Scientific Intelligence.

Seizing the opportunity to create Wordfest’s first writers conference, we couldn’t think of a better (or more unexpected) role model. The Bionic Women Writers Experience is the weekend getaway we all deserve to rebuild ourselves stronger, faster and with ’70s hair.

We’ve assembled an exclusive roster of fearless Canadians to help you break through your barriers: Gwen Benaway (Governor General’s Literary Award), Claire Cameron (longlisted for the Rogers Writers’ Trust and Bailey’s Women’s Prize for Fiction), Kate Harris (RBC Taylor Prize) and Jenny Heijun Wills (Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize).

Are you an aspiring writer or an avid reader? An established author or an adventurous soul? An extroverted introvert or an introverted extrovert? This is the creative gathering for anyone who is curious about exploring and expressing their innate bionic powers.

Of course, you don’t have to identify as a woman or even have hair to be welcome. Bionic power is for everyone!

Sunday Morning Showcase

What better way to wrap up The Bionic Women Writers Experience than by raising the bionic inspiration bar. Don’t miss our bonus showcase featuring two of spring 2020’s most talked-about female authors.

Critically acclaimed novelist Tessa McWatt turns her eye on herself, her body, and the world in a powerful new work of non-fiction, Shame on Me: An Anatomy of Race and Belonging.

Maria Reva brings the dark absurdity of early Gary Shteyngart, the empathy of Miriam Toews, and the sly interconnectedness of Anthony Marra’s The Tsar of Love and Techno to a sparkling work of fiction inspired by her family’s own experiences in Ukraine in her book, Good Citizens Need Not Fear.
