SATURDAY, OCT 19 @ 10AM FREE
Memorial Park Library, Alexander Calhoun Salon, Main Floor

Though set worlds and generations apart, friendship, masculinity, and the madness and aftermath of war are delicately explored in both Benjamin Hertwig’s (Juiceboxers, Afghanistan) and Alice Winn’s (In Memoriam, World War I) debut novels. Deborah Willis—who edited Hertwig’s novel—will lead the discussion. Expect to leave both deeply shaken and stirred by what human beings are capable of in their darkest hours.
Deborah Willis’ novel, Girlfriend on Mars, was longlisted for The 2023 Scotiabank Giller Prize, the 2024 Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour, and The Forest of Reading Evergreen Award. Her short story collection, The Dark and Other Love Stories, was also longlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize. Her first book, Vanishing and Other Stories, was named a The Globe and Mail’s Best Books of 2009, and was shortlisted for the Governor General’s Literary Award for Fiction. Willis’ work has also appeared in The Walrus, Virginia Quarterly Review, The Iowa Review, Lucky Peach, and Zoetrope. She has worked as a bookseller at Munro’s Books in Victoria, as a technical writer, and as a writer-in-residence at Joy Kogawa House in Vancouver, MacEwan University, and the University of Calgary. Willis is an editor at Freehand Books and lives in Calgary with her partner, Kris Demeanor, and daughter.
