Teachers and Students Loved Wordfest 2014
Following the 19th annual Festival in October 2014, educators, parents and caregivers in Calgary and the Bow Valley told us how much Wordfest’s youth program inspired a love of books and storytelling among young readers. Here’s what they had to say about the impact on students and the community:
Over the past 8 years I have encouraged my teachers and students from Kindergarten to Grade 9 to participate in Wordfest. To date, no one has been disappointed!
Kimberly Grounding – Teacher – St. William
Wordfest was a fantastic way to get our students pumped about reading at the beginning of the year. After reading The Metro Dogs of Moscow and priming the kids to meet the author, they were more excited than I had ever seen for this field trip. It has made a lasting effect on the rest of the year, as the students are now eager to read and engage more meaningfully with text!
Gabby Calder – Teacher – Master’s Academy
Many students expressed that they couldn’t wait to read the books presented! Thank you for the opportunity!
Abigail Gregory – Teacher – St. Damien
We had Ruth join us at our Childcare centre. The age group was from 2 to 5 years old. The format was wonderful and Ruth was able to engage the children in a story telling format which is wonderful for this group. The feedback we have received has been positive from both our Educators and families.
Karen Denise Szabo-McGregor – Educator – Of Daycare
Every year Wordfest provides a variety of opportunities for young people to experience the power of story.
At the 19th annual Festival, 9,122 students from 58 schools participated in Wordfest events for young readers, held in public venues such as the Glenbow and the Calgary Public Library, or at artist appearances held in schools.
