About the Project

Sequence Book CoverA twist on the classic lip dub in which fans create their own music videos, Wordfest is recruiting Calgarians to create a literary-inspired video recording or “lit dub” starring a broad spectrum of Calgary book lovers who will collectively read from Sequence, a play by the Calgary-based writer Arun Lakra.

In Sequence, by Arun Lakra, two narratives intertwine like a fragment of DNA to examine the interplay between logic and metaphysics, science and faith, luck and probability. With razor-sharp wit and playful language, Sequence asks, in our lives, in our universe, and even in our stories, does order matter?

Participants who volunteer their time for the project will read assigned portions of the Lakra's play and have their individual readings captured using the Festival’s professional video equipment. The recording sessions may include contributions from audience members, volunteers, Wordfest artists and local celebrities. Raw footage will be captured on location at the 19th annual Wordfest from October 14-19, 2014, and additional recordings may occur at scheduled times thereafter. The performances will then be edited seamlessly into a collective presentation of the work – almost as if participants are taking turns reading a section of the work in real-time before passing the book to the next reader.

All participants will be encouraged to personalize their individual contributions, if they choose, by being as imaginative and expressive as possible when reading from Arun Lakra’s work. If they prefer to appear in costume, speak in a dramatic voice, re-enact dialogue from Sequence, or simply read aloud modestly, all forms of expression will be welcomed and supported when capturing the readings.

The final, edited video will be made available on wordfest.com and the Festival’s channel on vimeo.com. To maximize viewership, other organizations may also "embed" the video on their own sites, and Wordfest will promote the video through targeted e-blasts and social media.
