Wordfest Teen Reads
“One must be careful of books, and what is inside them, for words have the power to change us.”
—Cassandra Clare, Clockwork Angel
International publishing company, Scholastic, stated in their annual report “The State of Kids & Reading” that teens are losing interest in reading books for fun. Scholastic’s survey found that 58% of children, aged 6 to 17, love reading books for fun, however, their enjoyment of reading declines immensely after age 11. The publishing firm determined that only 17% of youth, aged 15 to 17, read for leisure during the week. As youth get older their love of reading quickly diminishes and we, at Wordfest, work to rectify this. Each year we feature esteemed literary artists to share our passion for reading, illustration and poetry with students and teachers in order to reignite the love of the written word in our society. Wordfest will be showcasing an inspiring line-up of authors, poets and illustrators at our 2016 Festival, which runs from October 7th to October 17th in Calgary, Alberta.
