Wordfest presents Potent Talks

About Deena Metzger

Deena Metzger is a radical thinker on behalf of the natural world and planetary survival, a teacher of writing and healing practices for 50 years and a writer and activist profoundly concerned with peacemaking, restoration and sanctuary for a beleaguered world. She has written eight works of fiction, five poetry collections, several plays and works of non-fiction. Her books examine the tragic failure of contemporary culture and provide guidance for personal, political, environmental and spiritual healing. Her novel La Negra y Blanca won the 2012 Oakland Pen Award and her Warrior Poster photograph is celebrated around the world as a testament to a woman’s triumph over breast cancer. Deena has also been actively engaged in integrating Indigenous wisdom and medicine practices into contemporary culture through her projects ReVisioning Medicine, the Literature of Restoration, Daré and the 19 Ways Training for the 5th World. Deena lives at the end of the road in Topanga, California.

About the Host of Potent Talks

Marilyn Milavsky has spent more than twenty five years leading community projects related to health and the arts. Her commitment to the not-for-profit sector coupled with her creativity has resulted in her championing innovative ways to create unique and effective fundraising events for not-for-profit organizations like Calgary Hospice, Alberta Ballet, the Glenbow Museum, and Calgary Opera. She is past Chair of Calgary Opera and served on their board for twelve years. She has co-chaired the Telus Community Board and served on Advisory Committees for the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and the Sheep River Health Trust Advisory Council.

Other philanthropic endeavors include supporting Aboriginal Leadership programs at the Banff Centre, and being an active committee member for the Esther Honens Competition and Stars Air Ambulance. She is a past President for Celebrate Canada Day and is a long standing member of the International Women’s Federation [IWF].

Her current interest involves the gathering of community through initiatives like, The Salon for the Passionately Curious and in 2018, a partnership with Wordfest to establish the Potent Talks Series encouraging meaningful conversations that are relevant in today’s complex world.

Perhaps never before in the history of humankind has the disparity between Indigenous mind and Western mind been more on the pulse of what we must pay attention to in order to ensure our survival.
