How to Organize a Book in a Can Project

In celebration of the upcoming World Book Day on April 23, 2015, we’ve compiled some ideas and resources for educators, parents and young readers. Below is a suggested activity. Find other ideas here.

Book in a Can Project

Students will need to read a book appropriate to their independent reading level to complete this project.

Invite your students to decorate the outside of an empty, clean food can to represent the main character from a book or a scene from a book. The size of the can is up to you. It can be a soup can, coffee can or a formula can. Use photocopies of the book cover or illustrations copied from the book or, better, encourage students to be creative and design their own images and decorations for the can.

Inside the can, include a minimum of three physical objects (no drawings) recall significant events from the story. Objects must be able to fit in the can and they should be unique. The size of your objects may determine the size of the can chosen for the project.

Invite students to prepare an oral presentation or show and tell, explaining why they decorated their can a certain way and the significance of the objects to the story.
