Find Out What It Means to Micah White

Micah White is in Calgary, Friday, April 15, 2016. He’s a rebel with a PhD. He’s a protest innovator and co-creator of the Occupy Wall Street Movement. His debut book The End of Protest: A New Playbook for Revolution is a manifesto for the next generation of social movement. Clearly, a tidy acrostic could not possibly sum up this young maverick’s provocative beliefs or global influence. We did one anyway.

P
is for Pledge of Allegiance. Reportedly, White’s first act of protest was, in middle school, to refuse to stand for a class recitation of the patriotic oath.

R
is for Religion. In high school, White wrote an op-ed for the New York Times titled “Atheists Under Seige.” The piece landed him on Bill Maher’s Politically Incorrect, and earned him an award from the Freedom from Religion Foundation.

O
is for Occupy Wall Street. Along with Adbusters editor Kalle Lasn, White initiated the call for a resistance movement against economic inequality worldwide. The leaderless protest began in Manhattan’s Zuccotti Park on Sept. 17, 2011, and soon galvanized millions of people around the world to protest the systems that keep the wealthiest 1% in control.

T
is for Transaction Tax. White has spoken passionately in favour of a transaction tax on international financial speculation. Potentially, this controversial “Robin Hood” tax would put billions of Wall Street dollars into the public sector.

E
is for Esquire. In 2014, the magazine named White one of the world’s most influential under 35-year-olds.

S
is for Service with a Smile. White and his wife, Chiara Ricciardone, recently founded an agency in Nahalem, Oregon, for social-movement creation. The duo, whose clients include political celebrities and campaigners, specialize in strategically spreading emotions to trigger the next social movement. T
is for The End of Protest. White’s new book is poised to overturn everything we thought we knew about activism. The book explains why, despite its reach, OWS was mostly a failure. Then, with refreshing optimism, White shares his startling and compelling views on what needs to happen next to genuinely make the world a better place for the 99 percent.
