Staff Picks from Everett Wilson

EverettWilson-2014As the Communications Coordinator, Everett Wilson manages Festival marketing, media partnerships, publicity, print design, social media, video post-production and online content for Wordfest.

His interests in books lean heavily towards non-fiction titles and writers who tell their story with a critical edge or philosophical bent. And at Wordfest 2014, there are plenty of non-fiction books and authors in the lineup this year.

I’m always fascinated by those who deliberately (or sometimes accidentally) dive right into the currents of political or social issues when they write. Calgary is very fortunate to have top-notch essayists and thinkers such as Nicholas Carr and Naomi Klein at the Festival.

Edmund Metatawabin’s appearance at the Glenbow is also on Everett’s “must see” list. His event coincides with the museum’s new exhibit, Where are The Children: Healing the Legacy of the Residential Schools.

And the title alone of Metatawabin’s second event, Philosopher, Poet and Chief immediately piqued his interest. He especially looks forward to reading One Hour in Paris, the memoir of philosopher Karyn Freedman who is on this panel alongside Metatawabin, Sheri-D Wilson and Iman Verjee.
