A mother who grew up in extreme poverty to become the first Indigenous American judge. An Austrian father who escaped the Holocaust to arrive in an America that was his salvation. The Reservation/The Frontier. Expansionism/Freedom. In The Savage Mind: An Indigenous Legacy, David Treuer leverages his unique dual perspective on North America to offer a diagnosis of the violence, grief, and, yes, indistinguishable hope that is core to who we are as nations. He wrote the book as a letter to his children, blending history, memoir, and reportage, but it’s a timely message for all of us. We’ve asked Michael Christie (Greenwood) and Tanya Talaga (The Knowing) to co-host the conversation and lean deep into the complexities of Turtle Island—past, present, and future.
